Neuropsychology addresses the link between brain health and brain function

Neuropsychology is a growing field of neuroscience that connects how a patient’s mental state and behavior are impacted by brain structure and function. It explores the ways in which illness and brain injury can affect cognition and behavior. Neuropsychology may be part of the care plan for a range of brain conditions.

Evaluating symptoms

To determine how different brain areas are functioning, neuropsychological testing may be appropriate for patients experiencing certain symptoms such as difficulty with any number of mental faculties that might be caused by injury, illness or that are inherited.

Neuropsychology in practice

While diagnostic testing and imaging studies may be important for a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation, ongoing meetings with the patient and family often play the central role. The patient’s history, perceptions and performance on defined cognitive tests can provide critical insight into their condition.

The goal of neuropsychology at Baylor Scott & White Health is to help the patient and other care providers get a better sense of the severity of a particular brain issue to inform the care plan moving forward.
