Most women will develop fibroids at some point in their lives

Fibroids are the most frequently seen tumors of the female reproductive system. Fibroids are growths made up of connective tissue, smooth muscle cells and muscle cells that usually form in the wall of your uterus. In more than 99% of fibroid cases, the tumors are benign (non-cancerous). Fibroids start as pea-sized lumps, but they can grow steadily during your reproductive years.

Fibroids treatment

There are a growing number of effective ways to treat fibroids. Treatment is likely to relieve your fibroids symptoms. Since most fibroids stop growing or may even shrink as you approach menopause, the cancer doctor may simply suggest monitoring your symptoms carefully to ensure that there are no significant changes or developments and that the fibroids are not growing. For women with significant fibroid symptoms, treatment may be necessary.

Treatment plans for patients will be determined by their care team based on age, medical history, stage of fibroids and personal preferences.

Fibroid treatment options may include:

  • Surgery
    • Hysterectomy
    • Myomectomy
    • Uterine artery embolization

  • Medical therapy
    • Danazol oral capsule
    • Gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists
